Tour Des Artistes

2nd Saturday Art Walk in Long Beach

Article by C.A.

Locating the Tour Des Artistes art walk couldn't of been easier. That's because this fantastic art event was set smack in the center of downtown Long Beach California.

Sun shine, classic buildings and palm trees was the flawless combination for a perfect Saturday afternoon. There were local and International Gallery Exhibitions on display up and down Linden Avenue, as well as over 30 live bands, dance and Theatre.

The people were awesome and so was the food. As we strolled down Linden Ave and checked out all the rare and unique art on display, we met with talented artists who were busy creating their next master piece; right before our very eyes.

We met artist Dana McDowell and watched as she sketched her next project with grace and expertise.

Then there was spray paint artist Tobesko out of Long Beach, who demonstrated his raw talents by tagging up 2 crazy murals, "Devil Pigs" and "Good and Evil"

Right beside Tobesko stood artists, Deluxe Soul and Steven Amado, who were painting away on 2 huge canvas boards.

The adventure continued on with dozens of live bands performing on a stage in the middle of the street. They were all very talented but it was one unique band called "Sidewalk Society" that really caught our eye.

You can check them out by Clicking Here.

We'd like to thank every artist who contributed to this excellent event and look forward in seeing more of you all at the next Art Walk Exhibition.

Quotes by Famous Artist

Gustave Courbet

I have studied the art of the masters and the art of the moderns, avoiding any preconceived system and without prejudice. I have no more wanted to imitate the former than to copy the latter; nor was it my intention to achieve the trivial goal of art for art's sake.

The beautiful is in nature, and it is encountered under the most diverse forms of reality. Once it is found it belongs to art, or rather to the artist who discovers it.

Painting is an essentially concrete art and can only consist of the representation of real and existing things. It is a completely physical language, the words of which consist of all visible objects. An object which is abstract, not visible, non-existent, is not within the realm of painting.

I am fifty years old and I have always lived in freedom; let me end my life free; when I am dead let this be said of me: 'He belonged to no school, to no church, to no institution, to no academy, least of all to any régime except the régime of liberty.'

Giorgio Morandi

I am essentially a painter of the kind of still life composition that communicates a sense of tranquillity and privacy, moods which I have always valued above all else.

What interests me most is expressing what's in nature, in the visible world, that is.

It takes me weeks to make up my mind which group of bottles will go well with a particular coloured tablecloth.

A half dozen pictures would just about be enough for the life of an artist, for my life.

Mark Rothko

It was with the utmost reluctance that I found the figure could not serve my purposes. But a time came when none of us could use the figure without mutilating it.

The progression of a painter's work as it travels in time from point to point, will be toward clarity.. toward the elimination of all obstacles between the painter and the idea.. and the idea and the observer.. To achieve this clarity is inevitably to be understood.

Since my pictures are large, colorful and unframed, and since museum walls are usually immense and formidable, there is the danger that the pictures relate themselves as decorative areas to the walls. This would be a distortion of their meaning, since the pictures are intimate and intense, and are the opposite of what is decorative.

I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.

It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.

The fact that people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions.. the people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when painting them. And if you say you are moved only by their color relationships then you miss the point.
