Margarito suspended over hand wrap scandal

The California State Athletic Commission has begun an investigation regarding the possibility that trainers of Former welterweight title holder Antonio Margarito applied plaster-preparer inside the boxers hand wraps. Plaster-preparer is commonly used for casting broken bones and when water is applied, the plaster becomes hard.
Sugar Shane Mosley’s trainer Naazim Richardson said that he noticed that the wrappings on Margaritos hands were too thick so he requested that they be removed.

Margarito’s trainer declined to do so and began to sweat profoundly. Richardson became suspicious and demanded that boxing officials order the wraps removed and that’s when the plastered pads were discovered inside the gauze. This practice is illegal and Naazim Richardson has asked that Margarito be punished severely by the states Athletic Commission.

Doctoring ones wraps is a felony that can land Margarito or his trainer in prison for up to a year. The California State Athletic Commission is currently examining the wraps and is expected to make a ruling soon. This scandal may have opened up the possibility that Margarito may have cheated in his fight with Miguel Cotto on May 2008.

Antonio Margarito's license was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission while it investigates the crime.
