The Dolphin

Her silver body leaps with joy
With the attitude that life’s a toy.
Her happiness she now has found.
Bad moods of others, she can destroy.
Your mind her laughter will surround
With smiles and hugs and music abound.
The secrets of the world she knows;
Her understanding is profound.
The time, oh, on and on it flows;
Although to this she does oppose.
For the clock is ticking in her life-
On her home, we humans impose.
The tuna nets cut like a knife
And we put her kind through so much strife
The things we do, they cause her pain
No longer can she twist or dive.
And now her energy begins to drain
Our faults, they are the dolphins’ bane.
Death is drawing near for her-
But she has no way to complain.
The numbers dwindle, fewer and fewer;
With every day they’re losing power.
And what we’re doing we cannot see.
Soon is the dolphin’s loneliest hour.
They chose long ago just to be free.
They went from land back to the sea;
Giving up their legs, arms, and thumbs
To live in the water, swimming with glee.
But who knows now what they’ll become.
To pollution and threats they may succumb,
For what else can they really do?
Just wait for whatever help may come.
How smart are dolphins?
The short answer to this is that we do not know. There is no reliable method to measure intelligence in humans across cultures, so it is not surprising that comparing humans, dolphins, apes, dogs, etc. is impossible. There are some indications of their potential: they are fast learners and can generalize (which is also true of pigs). Also they can learn to understand complicated language-like commands.

DREAM OF THE DOLPHIN

The dolphin looked upon the child
Out from the sea so soft and wild
Come sing with me let go your fear
And share the dream you’re meant to hear
A heart can sing in rhyme and song
It’s in our hearts where we belong

Like all the dolphins in the sea
